FAULT ISOLATION TREE

How to Isolate HVPS Failure vs. Depleted Tube

When your CO2 laser refuses to fire, 50% of technicians replace the wrong part. Follow this sequential isolation protocol before buying equipment.

STEP 1: WATER SENSOR ISOLATION

Bypass the WP Interlock

A stuck flow switch or bubble in the chiller sensor leaves the WP circuit open. Bridge the WP and G terminals with an insulated wire. If the power supply now fires, replace the flow sensor, not the power supply.

STEP 2: TEST BUTTON TRIGGER

Manual Hardware Pulse

Depress the red TEST button directly on the power supply chassis. If the tube strikes and the analog ammeter deflects, your high-voltage circuitry is 100% healthy. The fault is in the DSP controller or USB cable.

STEP 3: ARC & OZONE AUDIT

Flyback Insulation Breakdown

If depressing TEST generates a sharp snapping sound, clicking, or pungent ozone smell with 0mA ammeter needle movement, the epoxy potting in the flyback has cracked and is arcing to ground.

Frequently Asked Power Supply Questions

What causes a CO2 laser power supply to fail prematurely?

The #1 cause of laser power supply failure is running the laser tube with a disconnected or high-resistance ground cathode wire. Without a low-resistance path back to the power supply, the 20,000V striking pulse arcs internally across the flyback transformer secondary windings, blowing the MOSFET switching transistors.

What does the green 6-pin terminal block control?

The 6-pin connector links the power supply to your machine controller: 'L' (active-low laser enable), 'P' or 'WP' (water protection interlock), 'G' (signal ground), 'IN' (0–5V analog or PWM power control), and '5V' (reference output for manual potentiometers).

Do I need a special high-voltage wire for replacement?

Yes. Standard 12V or 120V electrical wire cannot contain 20kV+ DC. You must use specialized high-voltage silicone wire rated for 30kV–40kV DC, and seal all spliced connections with silicone rubber sealant (such as Dow Corning 704) covered by high-voltage silicone insulating boots.
