How to Diagnose Laser Tube Failure via Plasma Color & Mode

Inspect the tube discharge column while firing a continuous pulse into thermal acrylic:

STEP 1: INSPECT GLOW DISCHARGE

Analyze Plasma Discharge Color

Fire a 1-second pulse at 30% power while viewing the central capillary tube. A healthy tube glows intensely bright salmon-pink or light reddish-purple. A dull whitish-blue or violet glow indicates atmospheric gas contamination.

STEP 2: PULSE TEST ACRYLIC TARGET

Burn Profile & Mode Symmetry

Place a scrap piece of 10mm clear acrylic 2 inches from the raw tube output coupler (before Mirror 1). Fire a 200ms pulse. Inspect the conical crater: it must be a perfectly concentric round dot (TEM00 mode), not an oval or donut shape.

STEP 3: CHECK CHILLER WATER TEMPERATURE

Maintain 18°C–21°C Thermal Envelope

Laser efficiency drops by over 1.5% for every 1°C increase above 22°C. Ensure your chiller maintains 19°C. If water exceeds 28°C (82°F), the gas stops lasing and optical output collapses.

STEP 4: REPLACE TUBE & REALIGN OPTICS

Seat New 800mm Tube & Walk Mirrors

If output power drops below 30W despite proper mA current, replace the tube. Level the new tube in rubber V-blocks, connect coolant lines, and perform a 3-mirror reverse optical alignment.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Technical & Field Service FAQs

What does a purple or white plasma glow mean in a CO2 laser tube?

The gas mixture inside a CO2 laser tube consists of carbon dioxide (CO2), nitrogen (N2), and helium (He). When electrical discharge occurs, the gas should glow bright salmon pink. If micro-cracks or seal leaks let oxygen or ambient air seep in, the plasma shifts to lavender-purple or bluish-white, and laser power drops to zero.

Can I replace a 40W tube with this OMTech 50W tube?

Yes, but note that the 50W tube is 800mm long (compared to 700mm for 40W). If your machine chassis is only 720mm wide, you will need to install an extension casing box on the right side of the cabinet to cover the protruding anode end.

Is the CW-3000 good enough for a 50W CO2 laser?

The CW-3000 is merely a radiator and fan without a compressor, meaning it can never cool below ambient room temperature. In a 78°F room, coolant will reach 85°F+, reducing tube lifespan significantly. A true refrigerated chiller like the CW-5200 is strongly recommended.
